One of the most popular low glycemic and smart carb diet plans of the past 5 years is the South Beach Diet.  Similar to the GI Diet, South Beach focuses on transforming your diet to avoid high GI (high / bad carbs) foods.

South Beach Diet - Start Losing Weight TodayWhile some plans have you counting points or measuring portions, South Beach is comparatively easy to start.  We like that it has a real plan - and you'll quickly see results as you work your way thru the 2 week 'Phase I' cycle.

South Beach is remarkably simple to follow - many feel it is better than the GI Diet.  The first 2 weeks are key - as you purge your system of almost all carbs.  Its only for 2 weeks however - after that the gloves come off and you have a lot more flexibility.

When we worked our way thru South Beach, we admit the 1st 2 weeks were tough.  As a carb addict (pasta, rice, & bread) we admit the 14 days were tough.  But the results were real - this isn't a fad or diet in a bottle - but we lost 15# in 2 weeks.

After the 2 weeks it gets much easier - you get to reintroduce carbs back into your diet - thank goodness!  What's different and refreshing about South Beach is its realistic - yes, you get to have carbs (even pasta), and like the Low GI diet you get real foods and can again have cereal and even pasta because you learn the right 'accepted' types.

To help you get started, an online planning tool can make your life much easier.  You won't need it after 4-8 weeks, but most offer a free profile to get started and you can join for a month or two.  Our favorite was Dr. Agatston's official South Beach Diet online plan.

More About South Beach and the Phased Approach to Nutrition

In step 1, you 'Banish your Cravings.'  Don't worry, its not forever -- just 14 days.  Its a necessary step, as you cleanse your system and remove carbohydrates from your system.

In step 2, you reintroduce carbs.  Yes, you can have carbohydrates (unlike some other carb avoiding plans, such as Atkins).  You will learn how foods relate, what are 'good carbs' as opposed to bad, and learn about yourself in the process.

Step 3 introduces you to the lifestyle and teaches you the final elements to maintain your newfound health.

Editor Comments about South Beach

The best way to evaluate glycemic friendly diets like South Beach or the GI Diet is to try them.  The beauty about the glycemic index is how it teaches you how to eat.  Finding the right plan can make all the difference in the world - their principles may be the same but their structure and flexibility can really vary.

We really liked the South Beach approach as it is a more formal diet with specific phases.  For some reason that really appealed to us - we knew Phase I would be hard but knew it only lasts 14 days.  Make it through the 14 days and we not only lost weight but learned food types, reintroduced carbs, and saw our energy level truly increase.  It was great - even though the 14 days were tough.
